You've seen the photos. Na Pali's sea cliffs stacked against the Pacific. Waterfalls dropping out of clouds into green valleys. Waimea Canyon opening up wide and red like something out of another planet.
You know a helicopter tour is how you see it. What you don't know yet is which company actually delivers an epic air Kauai helicopter tour and which one just sells you a seat.
At Aliʻi Kauai Air Tours and Charters, we've been flying this island for over 32 years. We're a Hawaiian family-owned company, and we fly private, meaning every flight goes out exclusively with your group. No strangers. No shared itinerary. Just you, your pilot, and the full Garden Isle laid out below.
Here's what you need to know before you book.
Not all helicopter tours are equal. The difference between a forgettable flight and a genuinely epic one comes down to a few specific things: how long you're in the air, whether the flight is private, how much of the island your route covers, and whether your pilot is a guide or just a driver with headphones.
A real epic air Kauai helicopter tour runs a full 60 minutes. It takes you to the landmarks you came here to see, and it puts the helicopter in position so everyone in your group actually sees them. That last part matters more than people realize.
We keep every flight private. You won't be paired with strangers. You won't get a route built around someone else's schedule. Your pilot has room to slow down, circle back, and put you exactly where the view is best.
Kauai is not a drive-around island. The road stops at both ends of the Na Pali Coast. Waimea Canyon's interior drops, waterfalls, and side canyons aren't accessible by trail. Manawaiopuna Falls sits on private land with no public access at all.
That 80% figure isn't marketing. It's geography. A helicopter isn't an upgrade on your trip. For most of what makes Kauai worth flying to Hawaii, the helicopter is the only way in.
The routes we fly at Aliʻi cover Manawaiopuna Falls, the Olokele Canyon, Waimea Canyon, the Na Pali Coast with its 3,500-foot sea cliffs, the Kalalau and Nualolo valleys, Hanalei Valley on the North Shore, and more waterfalls than you'll be able to count during the flight.

On a shared tour, the pilot follows the schedule. On a private flight with Aliʻi, you have input. You can tell us before the flight what matters most to your group. A photographer who needs extra time over Na Pali gets a different experience than a family with young kids who want to understand what they're looking at.
Our pilots aren't reading from a script. They know this island's culture, its stories, and its geography. They talk to you about the history of what you're flying over, not just the altitude and the name.
That's the difference you feel on an Aliʻi flight.
Your flight covers the full range of what makes Kauai the most visually dramatic island in the Hawaiian chain.
You'll fly into the Hanapepe Valley to see Manawaiopuna Falls, only by helicopter. The land around it is private. This is one of the few places in the world where a helicopter is genuinely the only ticket in.
From there, your route takes you over the Olokele Canyon and into Waimea Canyon, known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. At 10 miles wide and over 3,600 feet deep, it's a scale that aerial sightseeing shows far better than a canyon-rim lookout ever could. You'll spot Waipoo Falls, which drops 2,000 feet into the canyon floor.
Then comes the Na Pali Coast. The sea cliffs top out at 3,500 feet. The valleys of Nualolo and Kalalau open below the ridgeline. The Pacific sits at the base of it all. This is the section people describe for years after.
Your flight also brings you over the lush Hanalei Valley on Kauai's North Shore, with its taro fields and river delta framed by mountains on three sides.
Both configurations fly on our Robinson R44. Both give you full access to the same route. Your choice comes down to what you want from the experience.
Doors off helicopter flights means open air. Nothing between your camera and the view. You get unobstructed sightlines, natural light on your photos, and a more immediate physical connection to the altitude and the wind. Passengers must be at least 12 years old for a doors-off flight.
Doors on means a quieter cabin with large windows and full protection from wind and rain. For families with younger children (ages 7 and up, 40 pounds or more) or for anyone who wants a calmer experience, doors on delivers the same views without the open-air element.
Not sure which to choose? Call us. We'll ask about your group and give you a straight answer.
This island has several helicopter operators. Here's what separates Aliʻi.
We've been flying Kauai for over 32 years. Our operation is Hawaiian family-owned, and that shows in how we run flights. We're not a volume business. We don't fill helicopters with strangers and move them through a fixed script.
Every Robinson R44 in our fleet goes through daily inspections and thorough pre-flight evaluations before any passenger boards. We are FedLinks-verified by the Department of Defense, a clearance that checks business history, ownership, and compliance. That's not something most tour companies pursue.
Our pilots are experienced professionals who know Kauai's microclimates, its wind patterns, and how to fly its valleys safely. They also know the culture. In Hawaiian, Aliʻi means royalty. That name guides what we do and how we treat the people who fly with us.
We're also one of the only operators in Hawaii to offer two aircraft types. In addition to our helicopter tours, we fly a Partenavia P68 high-wing airplane where every seat is a window seat. And for those who want something beyond a standard tour, we offer private charters between Kauai and other Hawaiian islands, 24 hours a day.
All flights depart from Lihue. When you arrive at Lihue Airport, stay to the left toward the heliport, take a left at the second stop sign, and follow Ahukini Road to the Aliʻi Kauai Air Tours sign.
Plan to check in 30 minutes before your flight. Passengers must be at least 7 years of age and weigh 40 pounds or more. For doors-off flights, the minimum age is 12.

Closed-toe shoes that attach securely to your foot are required. No flip-flops. No loose hats or bags. We provide a jacket. Cameras and phones must have a wrist or neck strap.
Morning flights generally give you clearer skies and better light. Kauai receives significant rainfall, especially at higher elevations. Morning departures reduce the chance of cloud cover over key landmarks.
Yes. Children 7 years and older who weigh at least 40 pounds can fly doors on. Doors-off flights require passengers to be at least 12 years old.
Weather in Kauai changes quickly, and our pilots make real-time decisions to keep your flight safe while covering as much of your planned route as possible. Contact us directly for details on our rescheduling policy.
We'll let our 32-year record and our reviews speak to that. But we won't shy away from the claim: we believe we are. Every flight we offer is private, personally piloted, and built around you.
